Anton Bruckner is probably one of the last composers of whom can be said that their art is basically and profoundly religious. In a very real sense he offered up his music to the Deity, and tonight an attempt has been made to draw a portrait of this strange man who was at the same time very simple and very complex. The programme comprises three sections, and an interesting feature is that in each of the three parts the music is basically drawn from the same work - the 8th Symphony - so that it is heard once as the background to the composer's life, secondly as an illustration of his musical personality, and thirdly, simply as it is, straight and without qualification.
