Toni's attempt to save the girl he loves from a murder charge leads to further misfortune.
The basic idea for this film was suggested to Jean Renoir by a police commissioner in a small community near Marseilles, who had prepared a comprehensive dossier on a spectacular crime passionnel in the district.
