Hector Berlioz (1803-1869), the composer through whose 'Fantastic Symphony' runs a melodic theme which he called l'idee fixe, died 100 years ago yesterday. Various idees fixes - Shakespeare, Goethe, Virgil, and the women he idealised -
ran through his life.
To Michael Ayrton, painter and sculptor, Berlioz himself has become an idee fixe. With his own paintings, sculptures, and drawings and with works of art of Berlioz's own time, Ayrton illustrates his own very personal involvement with the character and music of this strange and passionate composer.

The programme features Berlioz's words and music performed by Jean-Louis Barrault, Josephine Veasey, Ryland Davies, Michael Rippon
