A film series introduced by Bernard Venables
Float-fishing on the Bridgewater Canal in Somerset on a summer's day.
There is no more exciting sight to the angler than the cluster of oily bubbles which come breaking at the surface-a clue that the tench has at last been attracted through the mud-bottomed, weed jungle to where your baitis resting. Tentative mouthings round your hook follow. Then the atmosphere of the lazy late summer's day alters from the tense to the intense. As the angler strikes, the behaviour of the lethargic tench is transformed to a bold and cunning strategy. The fish plunges deep, using the weeds to try to lose the hook or break the line; success for the fishermen is never sure until the glistening tench is safely landed.
