Tales of the Twenties

Sholokhov wrote this short story from his experiences in the Civil War. It tells of a family divided by doctrines and ideals. An eleven-year-old boy is torn between his father, whose loyalties are with the Don Cossacks, and his older brother who joins the Red Army. The Youngest Comrade becomes a pawn in a world that places no value on human life.

A took at the world through European eyes

Portugal today could stand at the crossroads-a poor country but crucially important with its vast colonial empire in Africa. For thirty-six years the country has been ruled by one man. Tonight Europa looks behind the facade of the 'new state' created by Dr. Salazar and at the Portugal his successors inherit.
