Horizon - man and science today
In 1917 Russia had fewer than twenty doctors for every million of her people; today the figure is over 2,000: almost twice as many as in this country.
The organisational changes that were necessary to build a Health Service in the country with the largest share of the earth's surface were vast. The resulting system is very different from ours.
Tonight Horizon discusses and shows part of a film made by a West German team which travelled the length and breadth of Russia. It shows some aspects of medicine we might like to copy, and some we might prefer to avoid.
