Ben Fullingim is 87-years-old and lives alone on an isolated mountain in the Sierra Nevada, California. For 50 years he has worked on his claim searching for the glittering prize. The gold fever had spread from the sleepy town of Sonaro, a reconstruction of the original 1850 town, where the community earns its living selling myths and romance to the tourists.

The action comes live from the Olympic
Stadium in Helsinki. At
5.10 400-metres hurdler Sally Gunnell tries to win the one major gold medal that has so far eluded her. In the championships at Split four years ago the comparatively inexperienced Gunnell could only finish sixth, but she came of age two years later when she took the Olympic title in Barcelona. This was followed last year by a winning world-record performance in the Stuttgart world championships, and Gunnell is hot favourite to add the European to her medal collection.
In the men's 110-metres hurdle at 6.30 Colin Jackson defends his European title. Like Gunnell he broke the world record in winning gold at
Stuttgart. Amongthose up against him in the final, unless the heats went totally against form, is his close friend Tony Jarrett , who took silver behind Jackson at both Split and Stuttgart, as well as Olympic champion Mark McKoy , who competed for his native Canada at Barcelona but now runs for
Austria.
Other highlights this evening include the contests for the 3,000-metres steeplechase, the women's longjump and the women'sjavelin.
Desmond Lynam , with David Moorcroft and Daley Thompson , introduces the events while trackside commentary is by David Coleman , Stuart Storey , Paul Dickenson and Brendan Foster.

It's now the final and the ten competitors have to display their skill over five new courses. Tonight they have to reverse a speedboat around a yard and face the biggest vehicle they have yet been expected to master. It is the Pinzgauer, a huge personnel carrier, which they will have to negotiate through the quarry. Justin Bell demonstrates and presents the programme, with commentary by Barrie Gill , and Tony Mason interviews the drivers. The Duke of Devonshire, who hosted the series at his ancestral home,
Chatsworth in Derbyshire, will present the prizes.
