From the first cave man who drew his image on the wall to today's provocative art, About Face provides a challenging history of the self portrait.
The programme coincides with Face to Face, an exhibition of self-portraits at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Its lush Victorian interior provides the opulent setting for paintings by artists such as Durer, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Stubbs and Hogarth. In contrast, Not Self Portrait is an exhibition of contemporary artists' work held at the spartan, white-walled Karsten Shubert Gallery and contains pieces by current-day luminaries such as Mark Quinn, Gilbert and George, and French performance artist Orlan, who undergoes cosmetic surgery without anaesthetic - all for the sake of art.
Omnibus examines and contrasts many of the paintings included in the exhibitions and finds some striking connections. The programme also asks whether the continual updating of the self-portrait masks the fact that it is, in fact, an outmoded genre, or does it still have potential for the future.
