Live coverage of the Uefa Cup first round, first leg tie as Liverpool return to European competition for the first time in three seasons to face top opposition in the form of Russia's Spartak Vladikavkaz. Liverpool, last year's Coca-Cola Cup winners, also faced Russian opposition on their last appearance in Europe. On that occasion they lost to Spartak Moscow. But Liverpool have an excellent record in this competition, lifting the trophy twice in the 1970s before going on to even greater success in the European Cup. Vladikavkaz, though, are the runaway leaders as the Russian league season draws to its climax. Liverpool will need to show their best form to secure the sort of result they need in advance of the second leg, which will take place back at Anfield in two weeks' time.

Second in a seven-part series examining the power and appeal of music and music-making for ordinary people throughout Britain.

Greg Stephens turned to Cajun music after the realisation that the public had little time for English traditional music, which, he says, has failed to move with the times and adapt to today's tastes. Together with the Cheshire-based Boat Band that he leads, Greg takes an annual sailboat trip to the Western Isles of Scotland.
In the remote harbour pubs, the group blends a mixture of Cajun and Creole music with a flavour of the Caribbean to produce their own unique sound. Thrown into the melting pot of influences is their summer travelling companion, JC Gallow, Deputy Sheriff of Momou County, Louisiana, who plays the rub board and sings.

On the 30th anniversary of the abolition of the universal 11-plus, selection, albeit in a different form, is now creeping back into the state education system. This film follows the fortunes of a group of children in Ripon, North Yorkshire through two rounds of testing and their long wait for the day of the results and either success or disappointment. First in a five-part series about the submarine.

Recalling the dangers posed by life in the early submersibles.

Michael Gambon narrates this impressive five-part history of the submarine - or iron coffins as they were once called.
The opening programme gives a sailors view of submarine life during the First World War combining dramatic reconstructions (based on personal accounts) with archive footage (some previously classified material). But it is not all heroics and camerarderie, the most graphic descriptions are of the grim conditions: the smells of petrol mingling with body odour, the cold (it took 10 minutes to chip the ice off their coats after a watch in the Baltic), and, of course, the constant fear.
