Tonight's final programme in the present series celebrates the work of the late
George Balanchine , widely recognised as one of the century's foremost dance figures. Recorded at the New York City Ballet's Balanchine Festival, it includes highlights from some of the Russian-bom choreographer's most popular works.
The programme begins with an excerpt from Tchaikovsky's Themes and Variations, followed by Stars and Stripes, Balanchine's tribute to the country where he spent the last four decades of his life, which is danced to the all-American music of John Philip Sousa. The company glides through the Der Rosenkavalier section of Richard Strauss 's Vienna Waltzes and Paris Opera ballet star Manuel Legris performs a solo from Square Dance before Britain's Darcey Bussell provides a programme highlight with her performance in Stravinsky's Agon.
The music is provided by the New

The second of two journeys by veteran French documentary maker Marcel Ophuls into the world of the war correspondent. Ophuls pulls no punches in his investigation into this most hard bitten of professions, paying scant respect to supposedly intimidating reputations. He poses a host of hostile enquiries, questioning the very need for journalists suspected of exploiting images of suffering without placing them into their proper context. He has nothing but contempt for those who value ratings over responsible reporting. But, in the final analysis and after a kaleidoscope of experiences during five visits in 1993 to war-torn Sarajevo, his overall impression is one of admiration for the generosity and courage of the great majority of journalists.

It's the hottest day of the year in a racially-mixed district of New York, and Mookie is on his way to work at Sal's Famous Pizzeria, run for years by the same Italian family. However, some members of the black local population are angry that their neighbourhood is being run by whites and "foreigners", and what starts as a series of petty disagreements escalates into tragedy.
