Second of a four-part series tracing the evolution and applications of the phone.

What women are openly allowed to do on the phone has changed dramatically over the past 100 years. A century ago, women who operated the switchboards were strictly regulated as to what they could say or even wear while on duty. Serena, a 1990s sex-line operator, is an example of how modern attitudes have shifted.

Off Your Trolley with Loyd Grossman 8.30pm BBC2
Are supermarket "ready meals" really agents of major social change? Some people believe that they are undermining the tradition of the family meal, when the entire household sits down to appreciate the kitchen endeavours of the cook (usually mother). In the second episode of Off Your Trolley Loyd Grossman follows a week in the life of the Bishton family of Derbyshire, who rarely cook "proper" meals but prefer to stock the freezer with convenience foods, eaten by the individual as he or she prefers.
There's a report from behind the scenes at Marks and Spencer, as Britain's foremost ready-meal retailer launches its new Indian range. And Clement Freud gives some devious tips about dressing up convenience foods and passing them off as all your own work.
