The Transformers
The quick-change artists of the animal kingdom are the suoject of this film. "It's about metamorphosis," says producerMoiraMann. "Some animals lead different lives within one lifetime. We filmed dragonflies, poison-arrow frogs, salamanders, barnacles and butterflies."
All animals change as they grow older, but the stars of this film are the ones that seem to leap evolutionary gulfs. Most dramatic, perhaps, are the salamanders, who move from water to dry land. "While we were filming them in Arizona a brush fire broke out and swept across the pond," says Mann.
"Those that had completed their trans-formation escaped, those still changing from gills to lungs were burnt to death."

Top British chef Gary Rhodes visits Norfolk this week. On the menu are British bangers with onion gravy and piccalilli, and apple tart made with Norfolk Royals. "I think a sausage should be treated with respect - nice and slow cooking, so I prefer to fry," he says. A taste test at Swaffham market proves his point.

The demolition of the huge, neo-classical Euston Arch in the 1960s to make way for the new railway terminus in north London, is still ruefully cited as a prime example of architectural vandalism. In the first series, Dan Cruickshank tracked down some of the masonry to a garden in Kent. Now, as the programme returns for a second season, divers are delving into east London's River Lea, hoping to raise the rest of the Arch.
Executive producer Roland Keating says: "The programme started because an enthusiasm for historic buildings and their place in our heritage seems such common ground to all of us. The buildings we look at are not necessarily great ones, but ones with a story to tell, and by bringing together different voices in one programme we hope to illuminate the subject in an accessible way. There'll always be investigative items, for example, but humour as well."
