Changing the Pretorian Guard
The South African police were always regarded by its political opponents as the agents of a brutal regime. Now the African National Congress, which led that opposition, is in power, and the police must serve President Mandela and his government.
For the last programme of the series, Peter Godwin has been observing the changing role of the security forces during the campaign, during the election itself and up to the present as South Africa adapts to this new identity. He looks in particular at an internal stability unit, the normal "blue" police and a white army regiment in Natal.
"The films asks how the security forces can be integrated into the new South
Africa," says series editor Keith Bowers. "We've included the earthy comments of black policemen, white commanders - and from township residents on what they expect from their police force.

The latest television chef to seduce our tastebuds may seem just like an ordinary sort of bloke. But Gary Rhodes has won many plaudits for his inventive but down-to-earth style of cooking ever since he earned a Michelin star at the age of 26. "i'm passionate about British food," he says and has made this six-part series to encourage people to feel as he does. He travels around the country discovering, cooking and enjoying regional produce includingthe great British banger, beef stew with dumplings and grilled mackerel with tomato sauce. He also goes on a wild mushroom chase, winkles out some seafood at a cockles festival and tries to hook his own saimon.
Rhodes kicks off the series with a visit to Manchester United FC to make them a suitable pudding, uncovers the secret of Lancashire hot pot and samples a menu in Blackpool.
