The biggest set of human rights trials since Nuremberg are about to begin in Ethiopia when members of the "Derg", the regime of the deposed dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam, is bought to court. In Terror on Trial George Alagiah examines a reign of terror thought to have claimed at least 100,000 lives.
The Derg jailed 250,000 people and killed tens of thousands during the Red Terror, a two-year purge of students and middle class intellectuals in the mid-70s.
During the civil war in Eritrea their bombing campaigns killed thousands more. They even manipulated the country's drought, deliberately keeping food from rebels. The regime's activities may not be well known in this country but there is a mass of incriminating evidence. "It was a vicious but highly bureaucratised system," says Alagiah "Just about every order to kill was noted and copied to superiors."

Documentary series looking at the plight of the Nottinghamshire miners as the coal industry goes into decline.
Leaks to the press create rumours among the workforce that seem to be designed to take the fight out of the miners at Annesley/Bentinck colliery. These men have fought long and hard to keep this, the oldest pit in the country, profitable, and they are justly proud of their magnificent achievement. The union knows that only the men's resolve can keep the pit open, but with redundancy payments of up to £40,000 available it is bound to be an uphill struggle.
