Since this competition to find the best of contemporary British design was launched earlier this year, the judges have sifted through 1,200 entries to draw up a shortlist of five designs in each of the categories of products, architecture and graphics, which viewers can now vote for by telephone and at exhibitions throughout the country. Details will be given at the end of each of the three programmes.

Gray goes in search of the qualities which make British product designers sought after all over the world. The judging panel-including fashion designer Paul Smith and Gordon Sked from Rover - describe how they have travelled all over the world before arriving at the five designs they have chosen as finalists in the product category.
