Robespierre was a cold-blooded dictator - so why was he a member of a society devoted to wine, kisses and roses?
How could he be a dictator without holding any government office? The French Revolution gave everybody liberty and equality, so why did France refuse to abolish slavery? Robespierre was a bloodthirsty monster who sent thousands to the guillotine, so why did he vote against the death penalty? The search for answers involves a voodoo ceremony, a crypt full of skeletons and a bleeding statue.
The story that emerges is of a man doomed by good intentions, who may have deliberately brought about his own destruction.

'Mad' Jacques Roux was a radical priest who officiated at the execution of Louis XVI and organised food riots in the harsh winter of 1793. Popular with the poor, he became too revolutionary for the Revolution's leaders. At the ruined church of St Nicholas in Paris, Roux preaches his last sermon.
