Acoustic Sounds from Africa
In tonight's programme, compelling performances from Baaba Maal and S. E. Rogie illustrate the extraordinary diversity of acoustic music from West Africa. In his native Senegal, Baaba Maal is the idol of the Poular-speaking Toucouleur population. Shortly before forming his electric band Dande Lenol (Voice of the Race) in 1985, he recorded a set of acoustic material with blind guitarist Mansour Seek . The two were recently reunited for one of the most stunning concerts of the year. S. E. Rogie , from Sierra Leone, is the leading exponent of Palm Wine Guitar music which evolved in the clubs and bars of West Africa in the late 1950s and typically deals with the more humorous aspects of love and life.
