Gertrud was the last film to be directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer and is the culmination of his life's work, epitomising his meticulous and subtle analysis of the undercurrents of sexual relationships.
Since its release in 1965, the film has steadily gained in reputation. Unwilling to take second place in her husband's life, Gertrud seeks fulfilment in an affair with a wild young composer.
