Subtle textures, beautiful presentation and delicate flavourings make the cuisine of Japan a wonderful contrast to many of the other cuisines of the Far East.
Madhur Jaffrey visits Keiko and Akiro Okamoto in the hills above Kyoto, and picks wild mountain vegetables for a traditional autumn noodle casserole. In Kyoto itself she visits an old Japanese travellers' inn, famous for its tranquil atmosphere and exquisite food. Also, she investigates more modern travellers' fare. A six-part documentary series revealing the cutting edge of Christianity. 4: China: Through the Fiery Furnace
During the Cultural Revolution China's six million Christians were persecuted, their churches destroyed. Now, in a new climate of religious freedom, churches are re-opening at a rate of one a week. But what kind of Christianity is it that can coexist with a communist regime? To find out, Charles Elliott meets survivors of the cruel past as well as new, young converts. And he hears the dilemma of Chinese Catholics, still torn between loyalty to Beijing and loyalty to Rome.

In this Late Show special,
Hermione Lee uncovers the story of Patrick Hamilton , a well-known and successful author in the 1930s and 40s. His plays Gaslight and Rope are studies of obsession and despair among the underclasses living in the shadow of war. His writing was curtailed by alcoholism and depression, and after his death in 1962 his works were largely forgotten. In the last few years, interest in this lost author has grown, and the programme includes interviews with friends of Hamilton, the critic Michael Holroyd and extracts from his major novels.
