In this Late Show special,
Hermione Lee uncovers the story of Patrick Hamilton , a well-known and successful author in the 1930s and 40s. His plays Gaslight and Rope are studies of obsession and despair among the underclasses living in the shadow of war. His writing was curtailed by alcoholism and depression, and after his death in 1962 his works were largely forgotten. In the last few years, interest in this lost author has grown, and the programme includes interviews with friends of Hamilton, the critic Michael Holroyd and extracts from his major novels.
