A series of 13 films in which a walled garden is restored, and worked as it was a hundred years ago.
Presented by Peter Thoday with Head Gardener Harry Dodson 2: January
Harry remembers his life in the walled gardens and his rise from garden boy to head gardener. In the garden he tackles the winter jobs - building hot beds to bring on early crops of lettuce and carrots and 'tagging and nailing' fruit trees.
Peter explores the garden's greatest asset - its four walls. He examines the elaborate system of boilers and pipes that heated the glasshouses, and unearths a very grand ice house.
'January is the last month of preparation ... the good steward who has husbanded his time, may now seat himself, and with folded arms give himself up to contemplation....'

Crusoe's Children
Robinson Crusoe is the great survivor of English fiction. Since its first publication in 1719 Daniel Defoe 's novel of shipwreck has never been out of print. It has been the subject of pantomimes, comic strips, tv series and countless films, from Hollywood to Nazi Germany. It has inspired economists, advertisers and real-life adventurers. And in recent years novelists and playwrights have been turning again to Defoe's original story, reworking for a modern audience its themes of solitude and the encounter with a stranger from another race.
With the help of Jane Gardam , Harry Greene , Lucy Irvine, Adrian Mitchell ,
Caryl Phillips , Pat Rogers , Michel Tournier and others this month's Bookmark explores the complex legacy of this extraordinary book. Featuring CHRISTOPHER ASANTE. CLIFFORD ROSE, MALCOLM STORRY and HEATHER TOBIAS
