The world's leading musicians combine to create the greatest rock event of all time. On 24 October 1984 Michael Buerk sent the second of his reports from Ethiopia showing the desperate plight of the starving masses there. At his home in Chelsea, Bob Geldof was so moved by the report that the next morning he started ringing around his friends in the music business. He persuaded them to pool their talents in order to raise money to feed the Ethiopians. Thus Band Aid was born.

Live Aid for Africa
Live from Wembley Stadium, London and J.F.K. Stadium, Philadelphia, with contributions from Australia, Japan and many European countries, Band Aid takes a massive step further to help eradicate the spreading threat of starvation in Africa with Live Aid for Africa. For the next 16 hours BBC2, BBC1 and Radio 1's stereo network help to broadcast this concert to the far corners of the world creating the largest viewing figure of all time. The generosity of this massive audience will determine the amount of money that Band Aid will raise for Africa. The first five hours come from Wembley with live music from Australia, Japan, Holland, Austria, Yugoslavia and Holland. The second five hours alternate between J.F.K., Philadelphia and Wembley.
