In the presence of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Kent Handel 's Messiah (arr Mozart) conducted by Sir John Pritchard
Handel's masterpiece has been re-arranged many times and even recorded in a pop version.
By contrast Mozart's arrangement, commissioned 200 years ago for a performance in German in Vienna, is restrained and elegant, using a baroque orchestra and redistributing high trumpet parts among the classical wind band.
Tonight's concert celebrates the 300th anniversary of Handel's birth.

Space Salvage: Update
Last November American astronauts recovered two satellites from space - a feat which promised to save tens of millions of dollars for
Lloyd's underwriters who have already paid out a small fortune on satellite losses.
Tonight's programme shows some of the delicate negotiations necessary to stage the rescue, the drama of the rescue itself and what has happened since.
And, with the recent loss of another satellite, it looks as though the astronauts may have to go up and perform the trick again next month. Narrator Hugh Sykes Executive producer JONATHAN CRANE
