from Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire with Geoff Hamilton and Clay Jones
Formerly the seat of the Earls of Harrington, Elvaston Castle is now a country park. It was in 1830 that the fourth Earl appointed William Baron to lay out the grounds, and this successful partnership resulted in the regal splendour we see today. Baron created intricate topiary gardens and planted examples of all the rare tree species which were available. So today's visitors can see magnificent specimens.
But, for the contemporary gardeners, it is perhaps the Old English garden with its well stocked herbaceous borders, and rare and attractive climbers, which will prove most interesting. Production assistant CHRISTINE HARDMAN
