Five programmes on the history of mass education in England and Wales. 1: Machinery
Popular education grew out of the Industrial Revolution. The elementary schools were themselves like factories. Mechanical routines; mechanical learning; mechanical obedience - this is what was produced by the educational machinery of the 19th century.

In July 1945, eight weeks after the end of the war in Europe, the Western Allies arrived in Berlin to take up their assigned sectors. Few could have imagined that 40 years later they would still be there; and that the former capital of Hitler's Third Reich would not only be split ideologically but also divided physically by 100 miles of concrete wall.
In tonight's film
Lord Chalfont, who served in West Berlin during the Cold War as a senior officer in Allied intelligence, revisits this amazingly vigorous half-city and looks at the curious lifestyle and rituals of a community which has survived a whole range of crises - but which is still one of the world's most likely political flashpoints. Stamford, Lincolnshire
This lovely town, full of fine buildings, was the first to be designated a Conservation Area under the Civic Amenities Act of 1967. 'It possesses five handsome churches, lovely houses splendid in carved ornament and detail and roofs made of the famous stone slates from nearby Collyweston.' There's also an excellent collection of civic regalia and just across the river Welland stands Burghley House,
William Cecil 's prodigious mansion set in a masterpiece of landscape designed by Capability Brown .
