Protest and the Suburban Guerrilla
Archway! Stansted! Sizewell! Dorking?
How far would you go to stop a road, a runway, a nuclear power station? Or even an oil well? Probably not far, unless it's on your doorstep. But what if it is? Polite demonstration? Outright obstruction?
People are losing patience, becoming angry. The evidence, including a specially-commissioned survey, shows that most of us now think that law-breaking can be justified. We have moved up that scale which ends in criminal violence, increasingly frustrated by the time-honoured procedures of petitions, consultations and public inquiries. 'They're a waste of time.... the faceless ones in government always get their own way.'
Ed Boyle traces the growing battles between national need and local interest: too often development and democracy are in conflict and direct action seems the only answer. Isn't there a better way?

But suddenly the elderly comic finds his well-ordered life interrupted by the arrival of a 14-year-old stowaway in the trunk of his car.
