In 1822 Ealing was a place in the country - a retreat for the gentry. The tithe map of 1840 reveals a tollgate, an animal pound and an open-air lock-up for vagabonds. Within 50 years it was a town, bustling with activity much as it is today.

On 20 September 1943 in a field near Salerno in Italy, 192 British soldiers were arrested. They were later court-martialled and found guilty of mutiny. It was a shocking business and a well-kept secret. For these men were heroes, who had fought with General Montgomery at El Alamein. How such soldiers came to disobey their officers is told in this documentary film by three of the convicted men.
Pte John McFarlane, MM, of Glasgow, sentenced to seven years penal servitude and still emotionally affected by the army's victimisation of his wife and young children.
Cpl Hugh Fraser of Aberdeen, sentenced to ten years but released to a near certain death on extra duties at the front.
Sgt Wally Innes, a Geordie, sentenced to death, and embittered by the taint of cowardice that still clings to his name.
This is the tragic story of poor officership, the effects of which are felt to this day.
In the second of four programmes the famous Korean violinist Kyung-Wha Chung is joined by the eminent Swiss oboist, Heinz Holliger , for the Concerto for violin, oboe and strings in D minor The Scottish Chamber Orchestra, leader john TUNNELL , is directed from the harpsichord by trevor pinnock. The programme opens with Suite ' 11 pastor fido ' by Bach's contemporary, Handel.
