Tomorrow sees the long-awaited opening of the new Barbican Centre for Arts and Conferences in the presence of HM The
Queen when there will be two simultaneous performances, one in the concert hall by the London Symphony Orchestra, the other in the theatre by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Tonight Richard Baker looks at the often controversial background to the whole Barbican scheme which includes residential flats, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the City of London School for Girls as well as the £143 million Arts Centre, and we eavesdrop on some of the last-minute preparations including the hanging of an exhibition of French paintings in the spacious new art gallery.
