Ealing - Queen of the Suburbs
In 1822 Ealing was a place in the country - a retreat for the gentry. The tithe map of 1840 reveals a tollgate, an animal pound and an open-air lock-up for vagabonds. Within 50 years it was a town, bustling with activity much as it is today.
Fred Housego examines records to find out what caused the change.
