The Harrisons Don't Go to School
Newall Harrison is 11. He has never been to school. Like his brother and two older sisters he has been educated at home by his parents. As a result, the education authority has taken the family to court.
As they await the hearing, the Harrisons continue the education of their children. The ' classroom' is the Harrisons' own smallholding. Here the children repair cars, weld, carpenter, cook, plant, buy and sell - activities which the parents fervently believe will lead to an eventual mastery of the three Rs. But the local authority is sceptical. The children have been diagnosed as dyslexic and there is a local school which has a special unit for solving children's difficulties in reading and writing. The issue will be resolved at Hereford Crown Court where the Harrisons will learn whether they will have to comply with a School Attendance Order.
