The European Cup Final from Zagreb
The German Democratic Republic has won the last three European Cups in both the men's and the women's competition, and will again be favourites to take both trophies. Derek Jacobi, Helen Mirren, Martin Jarvis, playwrights Peter Terson and Barrie Keefe - all products of the National Youth theatre, a unique organisation, which every summer brings 600 Young amateurs to London to work on new productions and present them to West End audiences. Over the years it has introduced actors like David Hemmings and Simon Ward, encouraged young playwrights and won praise around the world. In two days' time, the NYT opens its 25th anniversary season. But last December it seemed that this, the biggest season ever, might be the last - the Arts Council canceled the Youth Theatre's grant. Scottsboro: Southern USA, the mid 1930s - scene of probably the most controversial trial in American legal history. A group of nine black youths were accused of the rape of two white girls. Eight were sentenced to the electric chair, the youngest, only 13, to imprisonment. When Judge Horton came to their defence it ruined his career and started a legal battle which kept the boys in jail for a combined 130 years. This brilliant dramatisation of the events provides the basis for one of the most powerful television films ever made.
