A thousand years ago in the dense jungles of north-west Cambodia, successive God-Kings built ever-finer and more spectacular temples. So great was their achievement that there is today nowhere to be compared with Angkor for the number, size and perfection of its monuments.

Robert Erskine presents the last of three programmes in which everyday life in classical times is recreated from letters of the period. The Honourable House
' Will your true brotherliness have the goodness to send me some asparagus from day to day, as the vegetables here are all rotten and disgust me? '
A letter from the thousands found in an Egyptian rubbish heap which provide vivid images of the Roman Empire in decline around AD 600. A combination of high taxes and inflation resulted in the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, with land being the surest investment.

Since the Russian invasion of Afghanistan almost two years ago, neighbouring Pakistan has been actively bolstered by the west as a front-line state against Soviet domination. Yet Pakistan itself has entered a fifth year under the harsh military rule of President Zia Ul Haq. Through a selection of films first shown on BBC2's Newsnight, Bernard Falk examines some aspects of life in Pakistan today.
From the Afghanistan border he reports on the forgotten millions - the largest refugee problem in the world, and how Pakistan has come to terms with it. He visits the north-west frontier town whose only industry is armed resistance, and talks at length to General Zia about his rigid and unpopular martial law regime and the chances of a return to democracy.

starring
Boris Karloff
Henry Daniell , Bela Lugosi
Boris Karloff is at his sinister best in Val Lewton 's adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson 's macabre tale about grave-robbing in 19th-century Edinburgh. Henry Daniell is the unfortunate Dr MacFarlane who falls under the evil domination of Gray, a procurer of cadavers for dissection. Bela Lugosi is also on hand as Gray's blackmailing assistant and this was the last appearance together of these two grandmasters of screen horror.

Theatre of Blood starring
Someone is killing the leading theatre critics of London in a peculiarly hideous way. Each death, bizarrely, parodies a death in a separate Shakespeare play. The police are baffled. Surely the only person with a grudge of such magnitude is ham Shakespearean actor Edward Lionheart , and he committed suicide years ago ... Vincent Price excels in the role of the hand of vengeance in this stylish British chiller. ,
