This amiable comedy is set in those far-off days-the early 50s-when travel, even to Paris, was more of an adventure. The adventurers and romantics are led by Sim, as a dour diplomat, and Margaret Rutherford as an eccentric amateur artist ...

Reporter IAN WOOLDRIDGE
Less than one hour's plane ride from J.R.'s home town, Dallas, there is the most unusual air force in the world. Nearly 100 bombers and fighters from World War II wait in readiness for the scramble that will never come; they form the Ghost Squadron of the Confederate Air Force.
Under their commander, Colonel Jethro E. Culpeper , the 7,000 colonels - there are no other ranks - keep their aerial armada in the skies over Texas: To perpetuate the spirit that kept the free world free '.
Not all the colonels are Americans: HRH Prince Philip and Battle of Britain ace, Sir Douglas Bader , are among the illustrious British names.
Last October the air force put on its annual show of strength at command HQ. As the Heinkels and Messerschmitts, Spitfires and Mustangs. Liberators and Flying Fortresses took to the skies, the colonels reminded the world once again of a time when ' America was great'.

A series of eight programmes
Narrated by David Attenborough 5: The Haunted Land
The great Irrawaddy river is the backbone of Burma. Rising high in the Himalayas it flows south through 1,000 miles of jungle-clad mountains and arid desert Plains before entering the Bay of Bengal close to the capital, Rangoon. On its banks lie the ruins of Pagan, once the centre of a mighty empire, where powerful kings tried to outdo their predecessors by building ever more magnificent temples.
Today Burma is a socialist country, slowly emerging from a long Period of near-isolation from the rest of the world. Perhaps because of that isolation, it has preserved traditions and an old-world charm and sophistication which are uniquely its own.

Robert Erskine presents three programmes in which everyday life in classical times is recreated from letters of the period. 1: Letters in the Sand
To Zenon from his brother, greeting. The letter you wrote to Menon about Kallikon's money has been eaten by mice ...'
Zenon was a Greek businessman who, in 250 BC, soon after Alexander the Great's conquest, was running a large estate in the Egyptian countryside. Some 1,500 Papyrus documents survive from his in-tray, conveying a picture of the ordinary life of the Greek immigrants and native Egyptians, who did not always see eye to eye.
