In 1974, near Xian, the ancient capital of China, a group of peasants digging a well made an astonishing discovery. They came upon an entire army of 6,000 life-size terracotta soldiers, horses and chariots: the battle array of the first Emperor of China, the man who built the Great Wall over 2,000 years ago. Next Wednesday two million whites will vote in South Africa's General Election. For Prime Minister Botha, it is a crucial test of his attempts to bring some change into the system of apartheid, which has drawn international condemnation. But there is fierce opposition from within his National Party to any erosion of white supremacy. Steve Brad shaw reports for Newsweek on the crisis in the party which has ruled South Africa for 33 years.
