Lincoln Cathedral was the magnificent setting for this special television presentation of the Passion of Our Lord according to St Matthew by j. s. BACH
This highly-acclaimed production was first shown as a live relay on Good Friday 1979, and won a BAFTA craft award for Best Sound. The story is illustrated through paintings by Old Masters, and the performance is sung in an English translation compiled by Raymond Leppard

Cukor's version of Emlyn Williams' classic play marked his tenth collaboration with his favourite actress. Hepburn plays the indomitable Miss Moffat who is determined to stamp out illiteracy in a Welsh mining village. Among her pupils she finds a brilliant young man, Morgan, whom she is determined shall get a scholarship to Oxford. But an unfortunate romance, plus opposition from the local squire are but two problems for Miss Moffat to overcome.
