One hundred and fifty years ago, on 15 September 1830, a single gunshot sent eight trains off on a 32-mile journey from Liverpool to Manchester to mark the opening of the world's first steam-hauled passenger service.
Popular group Fivepenny Piece join the celebrations on the tracks of the world's oldest passenger station - the Manchester terminus of Stephenson's great railway experiment.
Liverpool-born actor/playwright Colin Welland points out some of the great engineering achievements as he travels along the 32 miles of track forged at the birth of the railway age.

Dive to the Edge of Creation
One-and-a-half miles down in the Pacific Ocean, sea-floor chimneys spew clouds of molten minerals. Extraordinary creatures cluster around warm-water vents - the most startling marine discovery in more than 100 years!
In this programme, scientists explore the inner world of the ocean with their submersible Alvin and a revolutionary colour television camera which probes the hot fissures in the earth's crust. For the first time, man observes how mineral deposits are created, and sees a profusion of life-worms 12 feet long, giant clams, sightless crabs.
How can such large creatures survive in perpetual darkness? How many more vents await discovery in the ocean abyss?

STANLEY SPENCER , RA (1891-1959) was one of the most imaginative and eccentric British painters of the 20th century. He was also a compulsive writer, filling innumerable pages with his observations on life and art. This programme is based on his notebooks and letters as well as his paintings, with film of Cookham, the village that will always be associated with him Spencer himself also appears in extracts from a BBC film made in the 50s.
Stanley Spencer gives his revealing and sometimes disconcerting views on his childhood, family, philosophy, war, sex, religion, . and his art.
