STANLEY SPENCER , RA (1891-1959) was one of the most imaginative and eccentric British painters of the 20th century. He was also a compulsive writer, filling innumerable pages with his observations on life and art. This programme is based on his notebooks and letters as well as his paintings, with film of Cookham, the village that will always be associated with him Spencer himself also appears in extracts from a BBC film made in the 50s.
Stanley Spencer gives his revealing and sometimes disconcerting views on his childhood, family, philosophy, war, sex, religion, . and his art.
