A Pattern of Building
Written and presented by Alec Clifton-Taylor 5: Totnes, Devon
Totnes, in a fine landscape setting on the southern edge of Dartmoor, was founded by the Saxons close to an important crossing on the River Dart. What gives Totnes its special identity is slate, quarried locally, and hung vertically, often in decorative patterns on many of the old and originally timber-framed houses. Inside some of these houses there is a series of handsome plaster ceilings. Totnes also has, unusually for England, some covered shopping arcades known as ' 'piazzas' and an ancient Guildhall, and ' while it isn't quite one of the most beautiful of our small towns', says ALEC CLIFTON-TAYLOR, ' it is one Of the most distinctive and the preservation of its individuality is vital '.

Known to the Police Presented by Eric Robson
Criminal records should be records of persons convicted of crimes ... but increasingly police records encompass persons simply suspected of crime, those who stand bail for others or who are seen in their company, even people who go to the most innocuous of political meetings.
In a year when plans are being considered throughout the police service for transferring manual records on to computers, with their potential for faster and more precise access, Brass Tacks asks just where the lines should be drawn between the acceptable, the questionable, and the downright objectionable.
