With these words, the builder of the Taj Mahal celebrated a stretch of water that is a paradise for the Kashmiris who grow flowers and vegetables on its floating gardens, and for the thousands of tourists who take to its famous houseboats.

This year's rate increases have been some of the biggest-ever, whilst many areas have also seen sharp cuts in services by local councils. 150 Years of Exploration with the Royal Geographical Society 1830-1980

The conquest of the Poles, the exploration of the great deserts, the discovery of the sources of the Nile and the Amazon, the ascent of Everest - all have been achieved in the last century and a half. And it was this golden age of exploration which saw the birth and rise of the Royal Geographical Society. In those last 150 years the society has supported more than 1,000 expeditions and helped fill in the many blanks on the map.
Tonight's programme joins an expedition-planning seminar as it considers journeying to the farthest ends of the earth; and looks back to some of the earliest exploration film ever shot: Shackleton's ship Endurance being crushed in the ice of the South Pole in 1915; Captain Noel
(above; taking part in the first-ever attempt on Everest in 1922; Dr Hamilton Rice exploring the Amazon by canoe and aeroplane in 1925 - film from the Royal Geographical Society's archives, never before seen on television.

Cajun Country
Donny MacLeod travels deep into the swamps and bayou of Louisiana to discover Cajun country.
The Cajun today still lives in isolation from the rest of America. He still speaks the pidgin French of his forefathers, driven into the swamps by their religious persecutors two centuries ago. And he still hunts the muskrat and the beaver in the murky channels that run into the Gulf of Mexico.
It was at sunset that MacLeod set off in search of more deadly swamp creatures in the company of WILLIE BADEAUX, the legendary ' alligator man' of Bayou Gauche.
