Starring Ligia Branice

Walerian Borowczyk brings the passions and cruelties of the Middle Ages into sharp focus against an astonishingly beautiful visual recreation of the period. In a castle in 13th-century France, the Baron and his virtuous young wife, Blanche, prepare to receive their king. The reception is a success but the favourable impression Blanche makes on the King is the first link in a tragic chain of events.
