The Royal Institution Annual Christmas Lectures to Young People

This third lecture of the series starts off as a piece of cake and ends with super-technology, as a laser pulse times a chemical reaction to the nearest millionth of a milldonth of a second. The connection is the intricate chemistry of plants: the starting point for nature's way of turning solar energy into useful work - the food chain.

Sir George Porter looks below the surface of the leaf to shew his young audience the molecular dance that turns sunlight into food.

Television in Black Africa
Every Monday night the Jericho Community Centre in Nairobi is packed out. There's wrestling on television. The fights are imported from the West, and very old, but no one minds. This is the viewers' top entertainment of the week. Every morning in Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world, children file into a straw hut in the bush to learn how to read and write via television.
In the second of Worldwide's three-part look at television in Black Africa, Richard Kershaw reports on how the medium is being used to entertain and educate its vast public.
