... they say, when somebody wants a bath?
Ron McCrindell 's Toys
Toys don' survive well; tin boats leak and slowly sink in the middle of the pond and toy trains get tired and the wheels fall off. The dreadnoughts and steam trains that first appeared in Edwardian toy catalogues are now rare collectors' items worth a great deal more than the few shillings that bought them as presents 70 years ago.
Soho publican Ron McCrindell has been collecting old toys for over a quarter of a century. Unlike most collectors of rare objects who keep their prize possessions behind glass, Ron Mc Crindell enjoys seeing his toys in action. This evening we invite you to share his pleasure in playing with the steam and clockwork toys that have survived from another age.

The second of a series about the Common Market countries. The Netherlands
The past 20 years have transformed the Netherlands from a rural to a highly industrialised society, and yet many of the older attitudes remain. A few miles from cosmopolitan Amsterdam women still wear local costume - and not just for the tourists.
These contrasts are very much part of Dutch life today. Traditionally interested in painting and music, the Dutch now have a variety of cultural opportunity out of all proportion to the size of the population.
This programme looks at some new town planning, a hippie meditation centre, a Dutch cabaret, the film industry and Holland's most popular TV programme. It also features performances by the Dutch National Ballet, the Rotter-dam Philharmonic Orchestra, and an interview with the nephew of Vincent Van Gogh.

Jay C. Flippen
Growing up in Chicago in the 1920s, Studs Lonigan drifts aimlessly through a world of pool halls and bar-rooms, carousing with his gang of teenage idlers, Kenny, Weary and Paulie, and unwilling to face up to the realities of life.
This film version of James . Farrell's famous trilogy, a rich saga of Irish-American life, vividly recreates Chicago's famous era of Prohibition and gangsters.
