Through the Gates of Hell
Narrated by Andrew Faulds
The aim of this expedition was the first transnavigation of British Columbia from north to south, nearly 1,500 miles by boat. First a hard struggle up. into the Rocky Mountain Trench; then a 90-mile portage with 100-pound packs; and last, vast canyons and huge rapids, among them the dreaded Hell's Gate Rapid that has drowned many.

A music Workshop by Bernard Keeffe with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra leader ERICH GRUENBERG
It was not until 1899, when Elgar was 42, that the first performance of Enigma Variations revealed to the world a master-composer for the orchestra. Until then Elgar's life had been one long uphill struggle for recognition.
In this programme, filmed partly in the sweeping Malvern Hills of Elgar's homeland, BERNARD KEEFFE describes how, entirely self-taught and despite many drawbacks, Elgar achieved a unique orchestral sound. He conducts illustrations ranging from the first piece Elgar ever had played in public to his remarkable virtuoso composition for orchestra, the Second Symphony.

This listing contains language that some may find offensive.

'I've got an Old Gaffer - when people ask me what boat I've got I say a nuclear-powered gas turbine, you can't argue against it - that's what I have.'
'If you can hear the pub sign swing at 50 yards, upwind - it's time to double reef.'
Filmed in the creeks and swatch-ways of the Essex coast.
