The Pygmies are one of the oldest and most intelligent people in the world. But they were only ' discovered ' by the West at the beginning of this century when it was found that they were not, after all, half man, half monkey, and to prove it, were brought to England to grace society weddings. Dressed in sailor suits, they nearly died of heat stroke.
In the 30s and 40s documentary film-makers pursued the Pygmies to Africa, only to reinforce already popular misconceptions about them (Some of the films are shown in this programme). Today, now that anthropologists know more about the Pygmies than ever before, they are on the verge of extinction - forced into ' civilisation' no longer by the white man, but the black.
A rare opportunity to see a full-length programme about the world's most extraordinary people.
