Professor Paul Berg argues that, 'Certain types of genetic research should be suspended.'
PROFESSOR BERG is chairman of the committee of the US National Academy of Sciences which recently called for a world ban on certain genetic experiments. The fear is that a bacterium might be given an ability it never had in nature-to spread an epidemic disease; to resist an antibiotic to which it was previously sensitive; or to produce cancer. Tonight, Professor Berg argues his case before a gathering of scientists at the Royal Institution in London.
