The second of a series about the Common Market countries. The Netherlands
The past 20 years have transformed the Netherlands from a rural to a highly industrialised society, and yet many of the older attitudes remain. A few miles from cosmopolitan Amsterdam women still wear local costume - and not just for the tourists.
These contrasts are very much part of Dutch life today. Traditionally interested in painting and music, the Dutch now have a variety of cultural opportunity out of all proportion to the size of the population.
This programme looks at some new town planning, a hippie meditation centre, a Dutch cabaret, the film industry and Holland's most popular TV programme. It also features performances by the Dutch National Ballet, the Rotter-dam Philharmonic Orchestra, and an interview with the nephew of Vincent Van Gogh.
