A series about some of the best known images in art

The most popular and most reproduced of all English landscapes... a unique image of pastoral peace and comfort. When Constable painted The Hay-Wain it embodied a challengingly original vision. Why has it had such popular appeal? What psychological impulses does this peculiarly English painting satisfy?
Frederic Raphael, novelist and screenwriter, visits the original setting for The Hay-Wain, and puts his own view of the painting and its popularity.

George Mackay Brown was born in Stromness, Orkney, in 1921. He read English at Edinburgh University but poor health forced him to cut short his studies. He returned to Orkney - to die or to live by his pen. Fortunately the latter course has succeeded magnificently and has led to many literary awards. In this programme Mackay Brown creates a tapestry of the Orkney Islands.

The 'Toilet of Venus' by Velazquez is one of the world's best-known pictures. This life-size study of a naked woman lying on a bed is at first the most simple and obvious of paintings. On closer investigation it proves to be full of puzzling mysteries.
Is the girl Venus at all? Why is a 16th-century Spanish painting known as 'The Rokeby Venus'?

Those who observe Venus include:
Gordon Booth, Publications Department, National Gallery
Michael Levey, Keeper of the National Gallery
Victor Lownes, Managing Director of the Playboy Club
R.A. Morritt of Rokeby Park, Yorkshire
