at Twickenham
Today's match was the official beginning of this momentous season which will celebrate the founding of a new sport in January 1871.
The game itself provides special interest for all Rugby Union enthusiasts: far from being just an entertaining exhibition, it will parade the talents of the players who will form the bulk of the British Lions Tour of New Zealand next summer.

A fur trader made the claim in the 17th century, and it was no more than the truth.
The Hudson's Bay Company were once 'absolute lords and proprietors' over more than three million square miles of territory, and they are today the oldest chartered trading company in the world.
Their 300-year history has also been a history of transportation: a transatlantic voyage in a 43-ton ketch; journeys across a continent on foot and by canoe, and around the rim of the Arctic on snow shoes and with dog teams, by skidoo and tractor train. Nowadays, aircraft share in all of this -float planes for landing on water, ski-equipped planes for snow and ice.
