Five programmes about the European Economic Community today
Not another programme about the Common Market? Yes-but that is what is different about it. Most programmes ask the obvious question: should we join? The State of Europe is a series about the Market itself - the people who have been involved in building the Common Market talk about what it all means for them. And at the end you will probably find that you can answer the question should we join and really know what you are talking about.

"I would just remind you of the basic time scale. It is four births and two deaths every second" (Dr. R. Boote, Deputy Director, Nature Conservancy)
Last month the Nature Conservancy had its 21st birthday. As the crisis in the environment increases - with threats from pollution and pesticides, or just too many people-their work as guardians of our countryside becomes more and more significant. Tonight's film is about their work, ranging from the dramatic way in which they saved the birds of prey from extinction to their painstaking research into the value of hedgerows, fast disappearing under pressure of modern agriculture.
Most of the Conservancy's work is complicated and intricate, and it is still a small institution. Yet their work is vital if we want to preserve anything of our countryside for the future.

Spain is women: Spain is bulls
Spain is guitars: Spain is horses
Four faces of Spain observed by Terence Carroll
The fighting bulls that go into the bullrings of Spain are a uniquely fast and fierce breed nothing like the kind that graze on English farms. The most famous and feared of the bulls are bred in Andalucia and that's where Terence Carroll goes in this film. He meets the wealthy breeders and watches them testing the animals to see if they are brave enough for the Fiesta Brava.
