George Mackay Brown was born in Stromness, Orkney, in 1921. He read English at Edinburgh University but poor health forced him to cut short his studies. He returned to Orkney - to die or to live by his pen. Fortunately the latter course has succeeded magnificently and has led to many literary awards. In this programme Mackay Brown creates a tapestry of the Orkney Islands.
